I am so excited, I don't know where to begin! Guess I'll begin at the beginning...

Simply Smashing! was invited to the Nigel Who? fashion show 2011. Now, I had not yet heard of Nigel Who? or it's innovative designer, Mr. Ronnie Bogel, but my interest was sparked. After all, word was out via two of our fave fashionistas/style bloggers (MODE Bay Area and The Stunning Post - find them on Facebook - you'll be glad you did!) that this was the designer to watch and the fashion show to see! So, off we went (Ashley, my Simply Smashing! cohort, and I) to see the show - and what a show it was! See for yourself... http://vimeo.com/26511502

Fast forward a couple of weeks... Ronnie and I were quickly connected and, thus, began the whirlwind of Nigel Who? coming to Simply Smashing! Just last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting this passionate man and designer of exquisite masterpieces who describes his work as "Classic Innovative," in person at our boutique. We chit-chatted about Nigel Who?, Simply Smashing! and general falderal, all the while introducing Ronnie to customers as they perused the boutique. What a delight!

Did you know, Simply Smashing! has polished up our focus on fabulous local and indie designers? Ronnie Bogel and Nigel Who? happen to be both! I am a fierce believer in always (and I mean ALWAYS) being true to oneself - in life and in fashion. Ronnie, too! Dare I say it...great minds think alike! ;)

Long story a little bit shorter - Simply Smashing! is heart-deep in a love affair with Nigel Who? and we are beyond-excited to announce a partnership made in style heaven. Beginning this Friday, August 19 2011, our boutique will be sporting TWO different looks from Nigel Who?, along with the fashion show (see link above) video playing for customers...all day, every day. Not only will we soon carry several of these incredible looks in the boutique (I'm telling you, the Pie Crust Skirt and the Cacoon Dress are to-die-for - and wait 'til you see the coat!), but we will happily take special orders for any of the looks on the video. Coming Soon: Rock N The Trend!

The design of these baubles is so intricate and detailed, at first, you don't realize they are fashioned with something quite unexpected. After a closer look, you say to yourself, "It almost looks as if...why, yes, they ARE made from guitar picks!"

I met with the talented (not to mention beautiful, artsy and oh-so-clever) designer of Rock N The Trend Jewelry this week and she showed me her wares. There was nothing I didn't love. Seriously. Loved all of it!

After playing jewelry dress up with Lisa (honestly, I was giddy with excitement - like a kid in a candy store), I scored an A-MA-ZING cuff bracelet, which I can't keep myself from wearing. With everything!

Needless to say, Rock N The Trend is coming to Simply Smashing! We'll get our first pieces in a couple of weeks - feels like FOREVER away! Meanwhile, I'll be rockin' my cuff bracelet and showing it off, every chance I get (neener neener neener)!

His way or the highway

I am sure I am not alone among women of a certain age who are crushing on Chef Bourdain. There's just something about him. That certain je ne sais quoi. For me, it's mostly the way he stands true to himself, no matter what (although, his sexy saunter doesn't hurt). He likes to throw the F word about - one of my all time favorite words of all time. He will eat and drink what he pleases, where he pleases, with whom he pleases. And, if you choose not to be around smokers, you'll have to choose not to be around this man.

Just another solid example of being true to oneself, which is, in my estimation, one of the most important things ... in life ... in style ... in love. A true turn-on for me :)

I say... by all means... reinvent the wheel!

I have a colleague who always recommends: "Don't reinvent the wheel" in business. He feels that, if most like-businesses are doing "it" (whatever "it" is we're talking about) one way, then that is the best way (*yaaawwn*). Sort of an if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it methodology.

But, that's just it. I believe it IS broke. When faced with a let's-be-safe-and-do-it-like-everyone-else mind set, I hear that little voice in my head, "Danger, Will Robinson!" In case you haven't noticed, a lot of those like-businesses are going OUT of business! In my mind, my friend's theory smacks of big box, corporate retail (my "it" has everything to do with boutique retail...specifically, MY boutique).

My experience is that of both a current boutique owner AND a female, boutique-shopping consumer from way back, and I come from a place of reinvention. I happen to believe in being true to oneself - in business, style, fashion & life - always. And, given today's ever-changing and somewhat frightening market, I feel it is uber-important to do exactly that, and be confident about it.

If you own a business, my best advice (and, believe me, my advice is worth every bit of the $0.00 you pay for it-;) is...

• Ask your customers what puts a smile on their face, and listen to their answers.


• If something creative speaks to you - do it - be true to your dream. The likelihood is that your customers will like what you like - that's what attracted them to you in the first place.


• Reinvent the wheel at your whim ... it's your business - you can always change it ... how cool is that!


• Never. Ever. Give. Up.

Be true to yourself, Daaahlings!

Yeesh! It seems everyone's a fashion critic these days. While this is not necessarily the hat style I would choose to wear for the royal wedding, it was Princess Beatrice's choice, and I say Kudos to her for being true to herself!

Did she do it for shock value (you know - shock value - Lady Gaga's meat dress - Bjork's swan dress) - I wouldn't wear one of those either, but there is something to be said for being artsy. At the end of the day, neither I, nor most of the self-proclaimed fashion critics, are likely to be invited to such a royal day of glorious fashion and, really, would we be able to pull off an outfit without criticism?

My point: All styles may not be for us, but can it suffice to say just that, without damaging comments toward a girl who dressed up for a wedding? Just sayin'

Love this shade of green - somewhere between emerald & jade - chosen for Pipa's evening reception dress (by Alice Temperley) for the Royal Wedding Celebration! The dress, itself, is beautiful on Pipa -- but the color is gorgeous!

I have two beautiful, Parisian-inspired screens at home with a splash of this color set against a cream/bronze background, and I want to paint some of my fab & funky furniture pieces this color ... I think I'll use this picture for a paint match!
